BLUETTI Power Shelter C20 (For EP800 / EP900 Systems)

Before anything else, be clear on what you’re buying. The Power Shelter C20 is an enclosure a purpose-built cabinet that protects the components of a BLUETTI whole-home battery backup system. It does not include the EP800 or EP900 inverter unit, and it does not include the B500 battery modules. Those are separate, significant purchases that go inside the shelter.

If you already own or are ordering an EP800 or EP900 with B500 expansion batteries, and you need a proper outdoor-rated home for that system, this is the right product. If you’re looking for the actual power station and batteries, those are separate SKUs.

Why a purpose-built enclosure matters

A whole-home battery backup system represents a serious investment typically $8,000–$25,000+ in inverter and battery modules alone. Sitting that equipment on a garage floor, propping it against a wall, or exposing it to unfiltered outdoor conditions damages three things:

  • The batteries — LiFePO₄ cells tolerate weather better than lithium-ion, but UV, humidity, and thermal cycling still shorten their lifespan
  • The inverter electronics — dust ingress and moisture kill circuit boards over time
  • The wiring — exposed DC and AC connections corrode, work loose, and become safety hazards

The Power Shelter is designed to fix all three. Aluminium alloy construction resists rust and corrosion (unlike steel enclosures that pit and stain over years). The internal layout organises the inverter, batteries, and cabling into a maintainable structure so a technician can access components without dismantling the whole rig. And the weatherproofing — enough for indoor or protected outdoor installation — keeps the elements out.

C10 vs C20 pick the right size

BLUETTI ships the Power Shelter in two variants:

Both variants share the same footprint: 45.67″ wide × 20.90″ deep (~1.16 m × 0.53 m).

Which do you need?

  • C10 — if your total battery capacity plan is 2 × B500 (~9.9 kWh of expansion) and you’re confident you won’t add more. Shorter, easier to place.
  • C20 — if you have (or plan to have) 3 or 4 × B500 modules, or if you want future headroom to expand. Taller and heavier, but you won’t outgrow it.

For most whole-home backup installations in NZ, the C20 is the right choice. Homes running fridges, heat pumps, well pumps, and a heat-pump water heater will draw enough to justify 3–4 battery modules for meaningful multi-day outage coverage. Buying the smaller C10 and later needing to upgrade means replacing the shelter entirely.

System capacity reference what fits inside a full C20

For context on what the C20 can hold once fully equipped:

  • EP800 + 4 × B500: ~19.8 kWh total capacity, 7,600 W continuous output
  • EP900 + 4 × B500: ~29.7 kWh total capacity (including the EP900’s own 9.9 kWh base), 9,000 W input capacity

For a typical NZ home, 20–30 kWh of battery is enough to keep essentials running (fridge, freezer, heat pump, key lights, home office) for 2–4 days of grid outage, or to provide serious self-consumption support for rooftop solar.

If you’re not sure whether you need consent, contact your local council before taking delivery. A returned shelter is expensive freight.

Where to install it

The C20 is designed for both indoor and outdoor installation, with a preference for:

Good locations:

  • Garage or utility room — ideal, temperature-stable, sheltered
  • Covered outdoor space — carport, covered patio, or eave-sheltered wall
  • Purpose-built concrete pad with weather protection — for dedicated outdoor installs

Locations to avoid:

  • Fully exposed rooftops — sustained UV and driven rain shorten lifespan
  • Coastal within 500 m of surf — salt corrosion accelerates aluminium wear
  • Freeze-thaw exposed sites — LiFePO₄ batteries need to stay above freezing for optimal cycling
  • Enclosed spaces without airflow — the shelter is designed with ventilation, and blocking it creates thermal issues

A note on weatherproofing: the shelter provides real protection against typical NZ weather (rain, wind, salt spray at distance), but it’s not designed for submersion, sustained horizontal driven rain, or extreme coastal exposure. For beachfront installations, factor extra corrosion protection into the plan.

Installation this is not a DIY product

The Power Shelter itself can be assembled and positioned by two competent people, but the complete system installation isn’t DIY:

  1. The inverter and battery modules each weigh 40–100 kg proper lifting equipment and two-person handling is essential
  2. AC wiring from the EP800/EP900 to your home panel must be done by a licensed electrician in New Zealand
  3. DC wiring from batteries to inverter requires understanding of high-current DC connections, proper torque on lugs, and code-compliant grounding
  4. Grid-tie configuration (if you’re syncing with utility power) needs certified installer sign-off and possibly network operator approval

Budget for $1,500–$4,000 in installer labour on top of the equipment cost. For anyone doing a full solar-plus-storage build, add another $3,000–$8,000 for the PV side.

Where the C20 shelter makes sense

Great fit:

  • New Zealand homeowners building whole-home battery backup for grid outages
  • Rural properties on the edge of the grid, where outages last hours or days
  • Off-grid homes with substantial solar arrays needing organised battery storage
  • Small businesses (workshops, farms, small commercial premises) with continuous-power requirements
  • Anyone planning multi-year solar + storage expansion the C20’s headroom for 4 batteries future-proofs the setup

Not the right fit:

  • Portable power needs — this is fixed-install infrastructure, not something you take camping
  • Smaller battery setups — if you only need 2 × B500, buy the C10 (smaller, cheaper) instead
  • Non-BLUETTI systems — the shelter is dimensioned specifically for EP800/EP900 and B500 units
  • Buyers who don’t yet own (or aren’t buying) the power system components the shelter alone is not useful

What the shelter doesn’t do

Worth being clear on:

  • It’s not a power system. No batteries, no inverter, no output. It’s an enclosure.
  • It’s not fully waterproof. IP-splash-resistant, but not designed for submersion or sustained direct rain exposure. Under an eave or in a garage is right; middle of an unsheltered lawn is not.
  • It doesn’t include monitoring, cabling, or breakers. These come with the EP800/EP900 and B500 units, or are added by the electrician.
  • It doesn’t fit non-BLUETTI equipment. Dimensions and mounting points are specific to the EP800/EP900 platform.
